Winter Car Maintenance Tips for Canberra Drivers

Canberra winters are harsh by Australian standards — overnight temperatures regularly drop below zero, heavy frost coats suburban streets, and black ice is a genuine hazard on Tuggeranong Parkway and the Monaro Highway in the early hours. Here's how to keep your vehicle running safely and reliably through winter.

1. Test Your Battery Before It Fails

If starting is slow or the battery condition is uncertain, arrange a battery assessment with a qualified provider. Test availability and replacement costs vary. Check the battery specification and the manufacturer's guidance rather than replacing it solely because of a generic age limit.

2. Check Coolant and Antifreeze Ratio

Use the coolant type, concentration and service interval specified for your vehicle. Do not mix incompatible products or assume one ratio suits all cars. Have leaks or uncertain protection checked by a qualified mechanic, and do not open a hot cooling system.

3. Inspect Tyre Pressure and Tread
