Winter Car Maintenance Tips for Canberra Drivers

Canberra winters are harsh by Australian standards — overnight temperatures regularly drop below zero, heavy frost coats suburban streets, and black ice is a genuine hazard on Tuggeranong Parkway and the Monaro Highway in the early hours. Here's how to keep your vehicle running safely and reliably through winter.

1. Test Your Battery Before It Fails

Cold weather is a battery killer. A battery that starts fine in summer can fail completely when temperatures drop below 5°C. If your battery is more than 3 years old, take it to Supercheap Auto, Repco, or any battery specialist for a free load test. Replacing a battery preemptively costs around $150–$250 — far less than a roadside call-out or missed work.

2. Check Coolant and Antifreeze Ratio

Your engine coolant should contain a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water to provide freeze protection down to approximately -37°C. Top up or flush your coolant if it hasn't been changed in 2+ years. Never pour boiling or hot water on a frozen windscreen — the thermal shock can crack the glass instantly.

3. Inspect Tyre Pressure and Tread

Tyre pressure drops approximately 1 PSI for every 10°C reduction in temperature. Under-inflated tyres on icy roads significantly increases your stopping distance and risk of aquaplaning. Check and inflate to the vehicle manufacturer's specification (found on the door jamb sticker) every time temperatures drop significantly.

Also check tread depth — the legal minimum is 1.5mm but experts recommend replacing at 3mm for wet and icy conditions.

4. Check Your Wipers and Washer Fluid

Cheap washer fluid freezes in the reservoir and jets. Use a quality freeze-rated washer fluid, especially if you regularly drive early mornings on the Monaro or Barton Highways. Frost-damaged wiper blades leave streaks — replace them if they're smearing rather than clearing.

5. Warm Up the Engine — But Not Too Long

Modern fuel-injected engines don't need prolonged warming — 30–60 seconds of idle before moving off gently is sufficient. Extended idling wastes fuel and can actually harm engine seals in some vehicles. Drive gently for the first few kilometres until the engine reaches operating temperature.

6. Keep Your Fuel Above Quarter Tank

A fuller tank reduces condensation buildup in your fuel system, which can cause fuel-line icing in extreme cold. It's also simple common sense — running out of fuel on a cold Canberra morning is both dangerous and deeply uncomfortable.
